The ASU Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club teaches basic Okinawa karate, kobudo and self-defense, along with Japanese martial arts (samurai arts) to students, staff and faculty of the university. Come train with us and learn traditions, martial arts history and Japanese, while building self-confidence and self-esteem. Each week, members learn the basics of Okinawa karate in a very positive environment and many advanced techniques as they progress. Some things covered in the club include basic stances (dachi), kicks (geri), blocks (uke), strikes (uchi); kata (forms) and their applications (bunkai). As one advances, there are opportunities to learn jujutsu, Samurai arts including the sword (katana), spear (yari), halberd (naginata), short stick (hanbo) and the ancient art of kobudo (Okinawa farming and fishing implements used for self-defense) including long stick (bo), two sticks (nitanbo), hand stick (kobutan), sickle (kama), rice flails (nunchuku), rice grinder handles (tonfa), hoe (kuwa), cane (tsue), surichin (weighted chain) and others. This club is a must for men and women who would like to learn self-defense as this is a very important part of the cirriculum.

Learn from the instructor's instructor. W. Dan Hausel has received dozens of national and international awards for his teaching methods including the American Karate Assocation Instructor of the Year, the North American Black Belt International Instructor of the Year and others. Inducted into 14-different Halls of Fame around the world because of his unique method of teaching that is informative and also entertaining. Also a member of Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in the 21st Century. This is an unique opportunity to learn two professions while as ASU. Focus on your primary major, and in your spare time, you can train with Professor Hausel to earn a black belt and a Sensei (Teacher) liscense. Martial arts instructing can be a very nice second profession as you move on into life, plus it teaches you self-esteem and helps to fine-turn your focus.
Before retiring as a research geologist and martial arts instructor from the University of Wyoming and Wyoming Geological Survey, professor Hausel taught more than 3000 students, faculty and staff martial arts and self-defense. Many are now university professors, chemists, physicists, engineers, geologists, law enforcement agents, nurses and more.
