Instructor: Remember Mr. Miagi in the Karate Kid? Professor Hausel has been likened to Mr. Miagi by some of his students – he has no interest in teaching people to fight – his philosophy is to teach people how to avoid a fight. Considered one of the top martial arts instructors in the US, Professor Hausel has been inducted into 14 Halls of Fame primarily for his teaching ability and methods. He was awarded the 2004 Instructor of the Year and 2001 International Instructor by two prestigious international organizations.
Description: Karate is a martial art. As an art, one learns philosophy, history, Japanese, meditation and other traditions. As a member of this class, you will be introduced to the secrets of Okinawa karate – a martial art that is more than 1000 years old. Beginners and advanced martial artists alike will learn blocks, strikes, and kicks along with pragmatic self-defense applications and kata (forms). Kata are the essence of traditional karate. These are forms made to appear like traditional dances to hide devastating techniques. Class members will learn some kata as well as many of the bunkai (applications) to the techniques in kata. Few instructors teach these hidden techniques as few have been trained in their use, but as a Grandmaster of Shorin-Ryu karate, Professor Hausel has learned all of the applications and enjoys sharing them with his students. In addition, class members will be introduced to kobudo.
Kobudo, the ancient art of Okinawan weapons is part of karate, and Okinawans learn to use farming implements in self-defense. As a member of this class, you will learn to use one of the more common farming implements known as a bo (6-foot staff).
In addition to classes at the ASU campus, Hausel Soke, offers classes at the Anari Dojo in Chandler (MacDonald and Baseline) on Friday evenings as well as special training and private lessons. Shorin-Ryu is also offered by Hausel Soke at Gold's Gym in Mesa (Southern and Country Club Road) on Saturday mornings, and at the Gilbert Gold's Gym at Baseline and Gilbert on Tuesday evenings.
