KARA TE

'Kara' 'Te'  -  The art of the 'Empty' 'Hand'

Karate

  • Karate is the art of empty hand self defense. In our club, you have the opportunity to learn as much about martial arts and self-defense as you desire.
  • Karate using a very important vehicle in training the mind and body which is known as kata. Kata, or forms, consist of a living encyclopedia of techniques incorporated into a form that has similarities to many traditional Okinawan dances. Very few instructors comprehend what kata is, but unlocking their secrets will lead to many devastating self-defense applications. In this style of Shorin-Ryu that is taught at ASU, you will have the opportunity to learn more than 70 kata and also learn what every single technique is used for and how it is used. No other style teaches this method.

Kobudo

Kobudo is the art of ancient tools or weapons. These were taken from Okinawan farmers and fishermen and developed to use against the invading samurai. Some of the many tools you have an opportunity to learn include:

  1. Bojutsu (6-foot staff)
  2. Hanbo (3-foot staff)
  3. Tsue (cane)
  4. Kuwa (hoe)
  5. Kama (sickle)
  6. Sai (fork)
  7. Tonfa (Rice grinder handles)
  8. Nunchuku (Rice flails)
  9. Manriki (rope)
  10. Nitanbo (2-sticks)
  11. Katana (samurai sword)
  12. Yari (spear)
  13. Naginata (Halberd)
  14. Kobutan (short stick or keychain)

Training

Training will begin as soon as we have our first organizational meeting. I (Soke Hausel) plan to build this club from scratch into one of the more educational martial arts clubs in North America. It will take time, but that is my goal. I did this at the University of Wyoming (one of the smaller State Universities in the nation) and was so successful that we had to turn away students because of the shear number. We were also recognized as one of the two top JKI martial arts groups in the world in 1999. At that point, we had one of the two largest groups of students than any other JKI school in the world.
